About Prefab Stairs

Where we came from and where we're going

Having been employed in the building and construction industry since the 70’s, managing director of Maccon Industries T/A Prefab Stairs, Glenn McLean, became aware of the growing interest in 'do-it-yourself' practices that became popular in the mid 1990's.

The Idea...

A demand of the simple, but somewhat challenging task of measurement and the assembly of external stairs, in accordance with the BCA, became apparent whilst working as a builder in the housing industry.

Availability of quality stair makers and assemblers was rare in the Gippsland region. Glenn recognised an opportunity and need required by the building industry for the ease of ordering, manufacturing and delivery of stairs, compliant with building regulations.

In Motion...

In 1996, Glenn began producing external timber stairs in his garage to supplement his income. He approached a few stores in Gippsland and started supplying stock and 'made to order' external timber stairs. Working 18 hours a day and most weekends to keep up with demand his idea of making stairs grew into a family business.

Over the past 15 years a local 'backyard' interest has become a successful business requiring relocation several times to larger premises due to the demand and interest from trade outlets, building industry trades people and 'D.I.Y' home owners.

Although still a family business, it now employs several local residents, both full time and part time, participates in school work experience and rehabilitation programs and is now a national provider for pre-fabricated stairs.

Growing Every Day...

With the success of the business now growing Maccon Industries T/A Prefab Stairs was able to employ sales representatives to promote and market the product to prospective retail outlets around Australia. Over the past 5 years Maccon Industries T/A Prefab Stairs has expanded to supply over 300 retail outlets and has been successful in attaining registration as a supplier with hardware giants Mitre10, Bowens, Danks and over 100 Independent Hardware stores Australia wide.

The ever growing stair empire has since left ownership within the McLean family and is now known as Prefab Stairs Pty. Ltd. New company directors Colin Casey and Karl Aeschlimann, have both been employed within the company under the previous directors as Sales Manager and Production Manager respectively. Having 15 years combined experience within the company Colin and Karl are set to continue with the same level of customer service and maintain the high quality product already supplied.
